Edgecam Helps Toyota Motorsport Push Limits for Dakar Rally

Toyota SA Motorsport (competing as Toyota Gazoo Racing SA) prepared three Hilux race cars for the grueling 2016 Dakar Rally, needing to design, machine and validate thousands of high‑precision components under tight timelines and extreme testing conditions. Each car contains 4,000–5,000 parts, and the team required a reliable way to rapidly iterate designs, program CNC machines and complete pre‑race sign‑off.

By using Edgecam CAM software to import solid models, visualise parts and generate accurate toolpaths, the team manufactured roughly 80% of components in‑house on lathes and machining centres. The faster, precise programming accelerated their sign‑off process, allowed extensive suspension testing, and enabled shipment of nine tonnes of parts to Buenos Aires nearly a month early, helping the cars meet performance and durability targets ahead of the rally.
