How Durham College Enables Dynamic and Mobile Emergency Response for Campus Safety

Durham College, a post-secondary institution with campuses in Oshawa and Whitby, needed a better way to protect its campus after its older wired CCTV/DVR system reached end of life. Budget constraints limited camera placement to high-traffic areas, leaving security gaps that trespassers could exploit, while footage retrieval was slow and remote access to live camera feeds was not available. The college turned to Verkada for a hybrid cloud security solution, including IP cameras and the Verkada Command platform.

With Verkada, Durham College deployed 185 cameras, 8 viewing stations, and tools like the VX52 Viewing Station, People Analytics, and cloud-based video archiving to improve campus visibility and emergency response. Security teams can now move live monitoring stations on carts, share footage remotely in minutes, and receive Person of Interest alerts to detect trespassers faster. The CH52-E multisensor also delivered about $5,500 in savings per installation, helping the college expand coverage further and make its response more dynamic, mobile, and evidence-based.
