How a School District Supports Health and Safety Initiatives with Verkada

Regional School Unit 13 (RSU 13), a K–12 district off the coast of Maine serving about 1,641 students across seven schools, needed to upgrade unreliable, hard-to-access DVR systems that often missed footage and took 30+ minutes to retrieve video. With CARES funding, IT Director Bruce Johnson sought a cloud-based, remotely accessible security solution and selected Verkada’s security cameras and Command management platform to support reopening and health/safety initiatives.

Verkada installed cloud-managed cameras across the district with mobile/browser access, Face Match/People Analytics for contact tracing and Person of Interest alerts, and hybrid cloud storage with scheduled nighttime backups to avoid daytime bandwidth strain. The deployment eliminated coverage gaps, cut footage retrieval time by over 83% (from ~30 minutes to under five), enabled instant SMS alerts and live sharing, and delivered a low-bandwidth, always-recording solution—helping RSU 13 reliably monitor safety and respond faster.
