How a School District Integrated Video Security and Access Control to Improve Campus Safety

Andrews Independent School District, which serves 4,319 students across six K–12 schools in Andrews, Texas, struggled with limited network bandwidth and an aging security setup of 300 analog cameras tied to local DVRs that only recorded on motion—making footage searches time-consuming and often missing important events. To modernize campus safety and preserve instructional bandwidth, the district selected Verkada’s cloud‑managed video security and integrated access control solution.

Verkada installed a hybrid cloud system (153+ cameras and door access control), delivering on‑camera storage with unlimited cloud archiving, a mobile app, advanced people/vehicle/motion search, custom live camera grids, granular sharing, live audio, and integrated door schedules and lockdown controls. The deployment cut per‑camera bandwidth to roughly 20 kbps, reduced incident search from hours to minutes, enabled instant sharing of live feeds with first responders, and allowed campus lockdowns in seconds—improving security while freeing network capacity for learning.
