How a College Uses Cloud-Based Access Control to Reinforce Campus Security

Greenfield Community College, led by Alex Wiltz (Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police, and Emergency Management Coordinator), faced a campus safety gap after a 2018 lockdown exposed limits in a legacy 2011 access control system: expensive licensing, no remote door lockdown, and no historical access logs. With FY20 grant funding, the College selected Verkada’s cloud-based access control to replace the old system and streamline emergency response and daily access management.

Verkada deployed its cloud access solution (managed via Command and the Verkada Pass app) to enable remote lockdowns, role-based access, scheduled door hours, centralized audit logs, and automatic over‑the‑air updates. The change cut manual door checks, delivered immediate lockdown capability (about 5 seconds), reduced licensing costs with per‑door pricing (their setup runs roughly $5,000/year) and produced an estimated $25,000 in annual savings; Greenfield now plans to add Verkada cameras for integrated visibility.
