How a City Standardized Video Security to Proactively Deter Threats

The City of Takoma Park, a Maryland suburb serving about 17,000 residents, faced an outdated, unreliable video system of mixed analog and IP cameras tied to three DVRs that made incident searches slow, video quality poor, and maintenance a constant burden. To address long footage retrieval times (often 2–3 days) and frequent downtime, the city turned to Verkada’s video security solution, including Verkada cameras and the cloud-based Command software platform.

Verkada implemented a hybrid cloud architecture with intelligent search, a centralized Command interface, live link sharing, and no on-site NVR, plus automatic updates to simplify multi-site management. The result: incident resolution dropped from days to minutes (about a 10‑minute average), uptime reached 99.7%, and Verkada cameras now cover four city properties with plans to expand, enabling faster evidence sharing and reduced maintenance.
