Case Study: RealTerm Energy helps West Springfield cut lighting costs with Verizon smart streetlighting

A Verizon Business Case Study

Preview of the RealTerm Energy Case Study

Historic West Springfield rethinks streetlighting for the modern era

RealTerm Energy worked with Verizon Business to help West Springfield, Massachusetts replace an aging mix of streetlighting technologies that was inefficient, costly to maintain, and limited to basic timer-based control. The town was spending $414,000 a year on underperforming lights and wanted to improve safety, increase control, and meet aggressive energy-reduction goals.

Verizon Business implemented its Grid Wide Intelligent Lighting solution with Verizon Light Sense smart controls, connecting more than 2,000 LED streetlights through Verizon’s 4G LTE network and a cloud-based central management system. The new system lets the town monitor, dim, and schedule lights remotely, identify outages faster, and reduce truck rolls and maintenance visits. West Springfield expects to cut annual lighting costs from $414,000 to $110,000, saving more than $300,000 a year and achieving about 73% annual savings while also surpassing its goal of reducing energy use by 20%.
