A Veritas Technologies Case Study
An Ivy League university was using a 15‑year‑old, tape‑based IBM TSM environment that was costly, fragile and time‑consuming to manage. Tape library and drive failures, a command‑line interface, and dispersed hardware across data centers made restores slow and consumed about 1.5 full‑time equivalents (FTEs) of the three‑person storage team, limiting the school’s ability to protect virtual and cloud workloads.
The school replaced tape with Veritas NetBackup running on a physical master and media server, third‑party disk appliances and automated replication to Amazon S3 (with a cloud‑resident NetBackup environment for cloud apps). The new solution delivered a GUI and easier configuration, faster recoveries, more flexible retention for regulated research, reclaimed ~1.5 FTEs, reduced total cost of ownership and noticeably improved data‑protection reliability.
