Showa Denko Materials takes first step toward Digital Transformation (DX) utilizing Veritas NetBackup and Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Showa Denko Materials, a Tokyo‑based maker of semiconductor and high‑performance materials, needed to modernize its aging on‑premises backup appliance to strengthen business continuity and cyber‑resilience. With several terabytes of backup data and growing concerns about disaster recovery and ransomware, the company decided to move offsite backups to the cloud to decentralize storage, improve security, and reduce operational overhead.

Showa Denko migrated backups to Amazon S3 using Veritas NetBackup, leveraging AWS Snowball for the initial large‑data transfer and NetBackup’s advanced deduplication (with AWS Direct Connect) to shrink ongoing transfers to about 200 GB. The new environment simplified operations with a single GUI, boosted BCP and cyber‑resiliency, cut ongoing backup costs by nearly 30% (saving several million yen per month), and set the stage for future multi‑cloud and archival optimization.
