Driving 25x Faster Backup at China’s Largest Retailer with Veritas™ Solutions

Suning Commerce Group, one of China’s largest retailers with 180,000 employees and 1,700 stores, faced escalating backup challenges: an increasingly large data footprint and a manual process that required transporting 600–800 active tapes between sites, which raised risks of data loss and consumed significant staff time. To meet growing SLAs and reduce operational risk, Suning needed a more efficient, automated data protection strategy.

Suning engaged Veritas Consulting Services to deploy Veritas NetBackup software and 5200-series appliances with deduplication, NetBackup Accelerator and Auto Image Replication. The new solution automated replication to the DR site, cut backup administration by about 50%, reduced storage needs 50% (88% deduplication on some images), lowered data-loss risk from ~1–2% to 0.1%, and produced up to 25x faster file server backups — delivering projected payback within the first year.
