Backup Time Reduced Dramatically with Incremental Forever Backup and Deduplication

JFE Steel Corporation’s IT Innovation Leading Department—responsible for the company’s ERP (J-Smile), BI tools and system operations—faced growing backup challenges as data volumes surged. Full virtual-machine backups exceeded 2 TB, routinely taking hours and sometimes overrunning windows, which disrupted DB updates and business services and increased operational complexity across decentralized backup servers.

To address this, JFE Steel deployed Veritas NetBackup (via Exa Corp.) using incremental-forever backups, client/server deduplication and centralized management. Initial full backups for 1.8 TB dropped from ~5 to ~3 hours and subsequent incremental backups after 200 GB of changes ran in about 35 minutes; overall throughput improved nearly tenfold versus the old environment. The change eliminated service interruptions, cut storage and operational burden, enabled centralized scale for future IoT/big-data growth, and produced reliable disaster-recovery restores.
