SPAR UK - Customer Case Study

SPAR UK, one of the nation’s leading convenience/grocery chains with about 2,400 UK locations and over 50,000 employees, faced ageing PIN pads, growing consumer demand for contactless/NFC payments, recurring costly EMV/device upgrades, and tightening PCI DSS and fraud-protection requirements. SPAR UK engaged Verifone to deliver a Payments-as-a-Service (PaaS) solution, initially deploying the VX 810 PIN pad and later migrating to the NFC/contactless VX 820 terminal integrated with Verifone’s PaaS.

Verifone rolled out more than 2,500 VX 820 devices nationwide and provided end-to-end hardware, software, gateway services, encryption, estate management and reporting via its PaaS platform. The deployment streamlined payments, enabled contactless acceptance and on-screen advertising, gave SPAR UK real-time transaction visibility through a customised web portal, and—per SPAR—“dramatically reduced the overall scope and cost of maintaining PCI DSS compliance,” improving fraud protection and delivering measurable cost and operational benefits.
