A Verbit Case Study
Swinburne University of Technology faced a shortage of Auslan interpreters and inconsistent in-person support that left some students—particularly those who are profoundly deaf—unable to access course content, a problem made more acute in remote and hybrid learning and constrained by Australia’s Disability Discrimination Act. To solve this, Swinburne engaged Verbit in January 2020 to provide live CART and transcription services for higher education and vocational programs.
Verbit’s live CART and captioning services gave Swinburne a reliable, schedulable alternative to interpreter bandwidth, delivering higher accuracy than ASR, reducing administration from last‑minute cancellations, and letting students access live captions and downloadable transcripts. Swinburne reports improved participation and equity, strong customer support from Verbit, and students able to independently book and use the service—supporting universal design and future-ready skills.
