Driving Clinical Transformation with a Strong Electronic Patient Record

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) faced significant challenges with its outdated, paper-based patient record system. Illegible handwritten notes and an inability to effectively access or manage growing data were creating complex issues for clinicians. The Trust sought an electronic patient record (EPR) solution from vendor Veradigm (Allscripts) that could deliver clinical benefits without the high risk and cost of replacing its entire existing IT infrastructure.

Veradigm implemented its Allscripts Sunrise Acute Care EPR using an agile, clinical wrap strategy that integrated with the Trust's stable patient administration system. The solution provided immediate clinical benefits, including electronic documentation, order communications, and medication administration. This gave clinicians instant, remote access to patient data, significantly improving care coordination and efficiency. The successful implementation has provided a foundation for WWL's future plans to go paperless, standardize clinical pathways, and share data with other hospitals and GPs.
