Delivering safer patient care with advanced technology solutions

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, an integrated provider serving roughly 400,000 patients annually across hospital and community sites, needed a more advanced, connected electronic health record to support its Quality Improvement Strategy and become the safest organisation within the NHS. After evaluating functionality, integration and usability, Salford Royal selected Allscripts’ Sunrise platform (Sunrise Acute Care, Critical Care, Emergency Care) to replace its legacy EHR and bring clinical decision support and integrated order communications into routine care.

Allscripts implemented Sunrise, migrating about 12 years of data (including ~180 million test results and 1 million patient records) and delivering an on‑time, on‑budget go‑live in June 2013. The Allscripts solution’s clinical decision support and medical logic modules helped Salford Royal reduce elective length of stay by 10.3% (.45 days) and non‑elective LOS by 3.4% (.2 days) (estimated annual savings ~$28M), cut hospital‑acquired pressure ulcers by 79%, achieve 95% compliance with the dementia/delirium bundle and 96% antibiotic‑prescribing compliance for C. diff while reducing C. diff cases from 47 to 18–19, and speed prescription turnaround (inpatient −20.7% / 3.34 hours; outpatient −29.9% / ~8 hours).
