Veolia Partners with the University of Pittsburgh to Promote Sustainability

The University of Pittsburgh needed a waste disposal partner that prioritized sustainability, could handle diverse waste streams on the University’s schedule, and provide greener options for chemical waste. The University engaged Veolia North America as its waste disposal and chemical waste services provider to meet these objectives.

Veolia North America developed processing methods that emphasize waste‑to‑energy, fuels blending, recycling, and other beneficial reuse instead of default incineration, and works collaboratively with Pitt EH&S on special projects (for example diverting used laboratory gloves from landfills during the pandemic). As a result, approximately 70% of the University of Pittsburgh’s chemical waste is now processed via waste‑to‑energy, fuels blended, or other sustainable options, with Veolia North America delivering flexible on‑campus service (90–100 workdays/year) and cost‑effective, environmentally responsible disposal.
