Veolia Partners with Allen County, Indiana to Expand Household Hazardous Waste Collection

The Allen County Department of Environmental Management in Fort Wayne, Indiana, faced a surge in demand for household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal: its long-running annual Tox-Away Day drew vehicles lined up for hours and, in one year, over 1,000 households delivered more than 42,000 pounds of HHW. To provide more convenient, year-round access for its 370,400 residents, the department partnered with Veolia North America to expand beyond the one-day event.

Veolia North America helped implement a permanent weekly HHW program—Tox Away Tuesdays—by carrying over the existing contract, setting up site segregation and containment, providing technical training and regulatory/manifesting support, and assisting onsite operations. Since opening on July 10 the program disposed of over 16 tons in the first three months, routinely processes about 80 vehicles on busy Tuesdays, and has increased public engagement and responsible waste management in Allen County.
