Case Study: Large US Coal-Fired Power Plant achieves zero liquid discharge compliance for FGD wastewater with Veolia North America

A Veolia North America Case Study

Preview of the Large US Coal-Fired Power Plant Case Study

A US coal-fired power plant leverages Veolia’s expertise to manage flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater

Large US Coal-Fired Power Plant faced tightening regulations requiring zero liquid discharge for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater and engaged Veolia North America to deliver a compliant treatment solution. Veolia North America supplied an evaporation and crystallization system using its patented CoLD® Process (Crystallization Of high-solubility salts at Low temperature and Deep vacuum) and provided long-term operations and maintenance under a performance-based contract.

Veolia North America implemented the evaporator/crystallizer with operations support, delivering uptime, capacity and effluent guarantees for a fixed fee and taking full-risk maintenance of process and ancillary equipment; the services began in 2019 and have been deemed successful. As treatment needs evolved after unit decommissioning, Veolia is supplying an additional brine concentrator to integrate groundwater remediation with the FGD system, providing a flexible, cost-effective, guaranteed solution while the plant focuses on power generation.
