A Vention Case Study
Universal Robots engaged Vention to develop a bin picking workstation for their Autonomous Motion Module (ActiNav), a software add‑on that provides vision processing, collision‑free motion planning and autonomous real‑time robot control. The challenge was to create a testable workstation that could vary key geometric parameters (robot/bin height, bin and base angles, distance) and eliminate vibration that could degrade the vision sensor’s image processing and skew cycle‑time measurements.
Vention co‑designed an adjustable R&D bin picking workstation and test plan that allowed quick permutation of parameters; after testing, Vention identified settings that reduced picking cycle time by as much as 40% and then produced a lower‑cost, manufacturing‑ready version for rapid deployment. The project was completed in 6 days (4 hours design, 8 hours assembly), cost $4,608 in equipment, and used a UR5 e‑Series, Photoneo vision sensor, ActiNav software and custom suction tooling — delivering measurable cycle‑time improvements and a vibration‑resilient workstation.
