The U.S. Forest Service Stays Green and Keeps Compliant

The U.S. Forest Service Southern Region, which manages 13.5 million acres across 13 states and Puerto Rico and supports over 2,300 employees and 28 million annual visitors, needed a better way to manage hazardous chemicals across 326 locations and a library of more than 2,100 safety data sheets as it prepared for the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) transition. Paper SDSs and dispersed records made compliance, tracking and inventory control time-consuming and error-prone.

The region adopted VelocityEHS Chemical Management, centralizing its SDS library and enabling cloud-based, mobile access, location tracking and rapid product lookup (including entering 526 new items for a research lab). The system simplified GHS/OSHA compliance, improved container- and location-level control, supported a green-chemical replacement initiative that reduced hazardous-material use, and delivered faster, more efficient chemical management with a strong ROI.
