Office Ergonomics at Abbott Vascular Moving Up the Curve

Abbott Vascular (AV) faced a growing office ergonomics challenge: when global ergonomics manager Mike Ha joined in 2008 the company had no comprehensive program and ergonomic issues were handled case-by-case. With roughly 4,000 computer users spending most of their day at workstations, AV struggled to scale face-to-face assessments, get departments to purchase recommended accessories, and move from reactive fixes to a more proactive approach.

Ha deployed VelocityEHS Office Ergonomics—a web-based training, self-assessment, and management tool—piloted in 2011, rolled out across U.S. sites by late 2012, and mandated for all employees (100% participation). Results showed under 1% high-risk, 6% moderate-risk, and 93% low-risk users; the platform’s reports enabled targeted purchases (e.g., keyboard/mouse adjustments, laptop pedestals), faster fixes, ongoing biennial training, and expansion of the program to international sites.
