What if affordable housing could drive GHG reductions and save energy

Energize Delaware, formerly the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility (DESEU), faced the challenge of providing affordable and durable housing for its vulnerable residents, as low-income households often face a high energy cost burden. They partnered with vendor VEIC to assess the feasibility of Zero Energy Modular (ZEM) homes as a solution for building decarbonization.

VEIC conducted a thorough feasibility study and then designed a pilot program to implement these highly efficient homes. The results showed that ZEM homes use about 70% less energy and save owners and renters an estimated $200-$300 monthly. Based on this positive impact, a pilot for 25 homes was launched, providing significant energy cost savings, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and improved health outcomes for low-income families.
