Case Study: Efficiency Vermont reduces peak energy demand and costs with VEIC's thermal energy storage solution

A VEIC Case Study

Efficiency Vermont cuts Brattleboro Retreat’s peak demand by 115 kW with VEIC

The customer, Green Mountain Power (GMP), a Vermont utility, faced the challenge of meeting high peak electricity demand, which required purchasing expensive power from fossil fuel generators, increasing costs and greenhouse gas emissions. They partnered with vendor VEIC, whose Efficiency Vermont program facilitated a solution using thermal energy storage.

VEIC implemented a solution by reviving an existing ice-based thermal energy storage system at the customer Brattleboro Retreat. This allowed the hospital to shift its cooling energy use to off-peak hours. The results included a reduction of over 115 kW in peak demand for the hospital, which saved them $24,000 in the first year. For vendor VEIC's utility customer GMP, the project eased grid strain, reduced GHG emissions, and avoided costly peak power purchases.
