Case Study: DC Department of Energy and Environment advances low-income home electrification with VEIC

A VEIC Case Study

DC Department of Energy and Environment reduces annual emissions by 31.9 metric tons with VEIC

The DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) faced the challenge of converting its aging residential housing stock from fossil fuels to electric systems in order to meet its climate goals, a process made especially difficult for low-income communities. To address this, the department worked with vendor VEIC to design and implement an electrification pilot program.

VEIC's solution involved conducting a first-of-its-kind pilot that installed heat pumps, performed weatherization and electrical upgrades, and enrolled participants in a solar program for ten income-qualified households. The results were highly successful, reducing annual GHG emissions by 31.9 metric tons and providing residents with greater comfort and more manageable utility bills. VEIC's work delivered critical insights that now serve as a roadmap for scalable electrification programs in DC and across the country.
