A Veeam Case Study
Western Health, a public healthcare provider in western Melbourne supporting four hospitals and 6,000 employees, virtualised roughly 250 VMs on a Hyper-V/Cisco UCS platform to deliver always-on clinical and administrative services. Their legacy backup tool was agent‑based, required costly upgrades and VM/host restarts, and routed backups through a central server instead of directly to their deduplication appliance, creating bottlenecks and risking missed backup windows at a time when data availability is critical for patient care.
Western Health adopted Veeam Backup & Replication, an agentless, storage‑agnostic solution built for virtual environments with early Hyper‑V and multi‑hypervisor support. Veeam enabled direct backups to the dedupe appliance, cut backup and recovery times by about 10x, reduced CPU overhead, eliminated bottlenecks, and delivered comprehensive VM protection for both Hyper‑V and VMware — all with simpler deployment and cost‑effective per‑socket licensing to maintain high data availability for patient care.
