Veeam protects Kern County data from earthquakes, wildfires and ransomware

Kern County, a nearly 1 million–resident California government spanning 8,200 square miles, faced a critical data-protection challenge: frequent earthquakes, wildfires and growing ransomware risk threatened the 40 departments that rely on always-available data. After moving to Microsoft 365—whose native protections the county judged insufficient—IT leaders needed a consolidated, scalable backup and recovery solution to ensure public safety, continuity and regulatory compliance.

Kern County deployed Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and Veeam Backup & Replication to modernize and centralize protection across its estate, backing up 2 PB and ~1,000 VMs to HPE StoreOnce with immutable snapshots and using Veeam DataLabs, SureBackup and Staged Restore for DR testing and malware scanning. The implementation delivered standardized business-continuity processes, strengthened ransomware defenses, validated recoverability for HIPAA/CPRA/PII compliance, and provided a scalable “last line of defense” for county operations.
