Veeam keeps patient data safe from ransomware at South Georgia Medical Center

South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) is a 3,500-employee not-for-profit healthcare system serving roughly 400,000 annual patient visits across multiple hospitals and clinics. Facing rising ransomware risk in healthcare, SGMC found its legacy backup (Commvault) lacked encryption, immutability, reliable scalability and easy workload portability, and needed better protection for clinical imaging, patient monitoring data and Microsoft 365 workloads.

SGMC deployed Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to encrypt and make backups immutable, backing up more than 500 TB across 430 Hyper‑V VMs and 20 physical servers to a hardened Linux repository and replicating to Azure Blob via SOBR, while protecting 18 TB of Microsoft 365 data for 3,500 employees. The result: faster recovery of diagnostic and monitoring data, stronger ransomware protection and legal-compliance support, a smoother Hyper‑V migration that saved about $140,000 in VM licensing, and greater operational confidence for IT and clinical teams.
