A Veeam Case Study
Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI), a Novartis-affiliated research institute in Basel, Switzerland, runs its mission-critical Oracle, SQL Server, Active Directory and web services on 60 virtual machines across three VMware hosts. With an IT staff of seven, FMI faced a time-consuming, manual disaster recovery (DR) testing process that took two weeks and needed fast, verifiable backups and the ability to start VMs without full restores to meet Novartis’ strict standards.
FMI implemented Veeam Backup & Replication with vPower (including SureBackup and Instant VM Recovery) to automate DR testing and run VMs directly from compressed, deduplicated backups. The solution cut annual DR testing from two weeks to two days, halved incremental VM backup time (10 to 5 hours), reduced backup storage needs by two‑thirds, and enabled more frequent, verifiable tests while simplifying and speeding recovery.
