Veeam backs up data of thousands of CULS employees

Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CULS), one of the country’s largest universities with about 3,500 employees, more than 3,800 mailboxes and responsibility for educating 30,000 students, migrated key services to Microsoft Office 365. Because Office 365 did not meet the university’s requirements for long retention, granular recovery and local control (including reinstating deleted employee accounts), CULS needed an on‑premises backup that was secure, easy to manage and allowed fast restores.

CULS implemented Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, running nightly incremental backups (around 2 TB/day) to a local NAS from two virtual servers with three‑year retention. The deployment delivers quick restores—from single emails to entire mailboxes—handles roughly two dozen recovery requests weekly, simplifies licensing (saving up to CZK 1 million per year) and scales to support future expansion such as adding student accounts.
