Veeam and ExaGrid help Children’s of Alabama keep kids healthy

Children’s of Alabama, a leading pediatric medical center, needed to ensure constant access to electronic medical records (EMRs) and research data so clinicians could deliver timely, informed care. Legacy backup systems were too slow—recoveries of standalone EMRs took as long as 13 hours—leaving the hospital vulnerable to outages and ransomware; the goal was to reduce RPOs/RTOs to 15 minutes.

The hospital replaced its legacy solution with Veeam Availability Suite and ExaGrid (leveraging Pure Storage and Nexsan snapshots), protecting about 600 TB across 1,500 VMware VMs. Backups and recoveries are now dramatically faster—RPOs and RTOs fell by 97% to 15 minutes—DR/BC testing that used to take days now takes minutes, and the environment is cloud-ready for future hybrid deployments.
