Veeam and Azure help government agency avoid a third system crash

A U.S. government agency that employs about 3,000 people faced two catastrophic crashes of a PII system (30 VMs) around the holidays, putting payroll and sensitive data at risk. Despite backing up and replicating data multiple times on‑premises, their legacy backup software failed to restore the environment, forcing time‑consuming rebuilds and exposing critical gaps in disaster recovery.

The agency replaced legacy backup with Veeam Backup & Replication and now sends copies to Microsoft Azure, using Veeam DataLabs (SureBackup, Instant VM Recovery, etc.) and Veeam Direct Restore to Azure to verify recoverability and recover workloads in minutes. Today Veeam protects 32 TB across roughly 400 servers/VMs, extends data protection to the cloud, helps meet Privacy Act and FISMA requirements, and gives the IT team far greater disaster preparedness and peace of mind.
