University of Toronto Scarborough protects research, the startup business incubator and online learning with Veeam

The University of Toronto Scarborough—a research‑focused campus serving more than 14,000 students and hosting 200+ research projects and a startup incubator—needed to keep authentication systems, web servers and online learning continuously available, especially during COVID‑19. Legacy backup processes were slow (up to 10‑hour nightly windows), sometimes caused VM crashes, and lacked recoverability verification and vSphere visibility, putting critical campus services at risk.

The university deployed Veeam Availability Suite to replace legacy backup, cutting the backup window by about 50%, adding SureBackup recoverability checks and providing advanced monitoring and capacity planning. Veeam now protects 40 TB across 400 VMs, supports cloud recovery to Microsoft Azure, is storage‑neutral (saving roughly $10,000 annually), and has ensured constant availability for research, the incubator and online learning.
