University Hospital of Würzburg Protects Digital Processes for Patient Care with Veeam

University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW) is a 1,400‑bed maximum‑care teaching hospital serving over a million people, with 6,300 staff and intensive research and clinical services. As clinical workflows became heavily digitalized and the hospital was designated a critical infrastructure operator (KRITIS), UKW faced stricter legal requirements and an urgent need to guarantee continuous availability of applications and data to avoid disruptions to patient care.

UKW deployed Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Agents to protect about 650 virtual servers, 700+ virtual desktops and roughly 900 TB of data, integrating backups with VMware, tape archiving and recoverability testing (SureBackup). The solution delivers instant VM recovery, granular restores via Veeam Explorers and delegated restore workflows for helpdesk staff, speeds bare‑metal restores of physical servers, and provides automated compliance evidence—resulting in faster recoveries, improved operational security and more reliable, 24/7 digital support for patient care.
