A Veeam Case Study
Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA), a Mexican higher-education institution with campuses in Mexico City and Tijuana and over 13,000 students, faced a growing data-protection challenge: 500 virtual machines across 30 servers relied on slow, tape-based Veritas NetBackup processes that could only be run a few times a year, were labor-intensive, and used volume-based licensing that grew costly. With ransomware and other cyberthreats on the rise and a new DR/BCP underway, UIA needed faster, more frequent, and more affordable backups that could protect both mission‑critical and non‑critical systems.
Working with HyperTEC, UIA replaced tape with Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, moving to portable per‑workload licensing, default encryption and a hardware‑agnostic platform managed from a single control point. The change automated backups, increased full data‑center backups from twice a year to multiple times annually (up to six), lowered licensing costs, enabled VM restores in minutes (including rapid recovery from ransomware), and set the stage for immutable backups to further harden resilience.
