UK Primary Care Trust Saves Backup Storage Space, Reduces Costs with Veeam Backup & Replication and EMC Data Domain

Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust, which supports about 3,000 users across 90 remote healthcare sites, needed a better way to protect roughly 80 virtual servers alongside its physical estate. The IT team had been using agent-based physical backup software on virtual machines, a slow, laborious and increasingly expensive approach that limited retention and made offsite replication and efficient VMware backups difficult.

By implementing Veeam Backup & Replication with EMC Data Domain (via partner Cristie Data Limited), the Trust achieved much higher deduplication and more efficient replication, enabling 12 weeks of physical-server rollback and 30 days for virtual servers while using only 38% of Data Domain capacity. Backups now complete in under nine hours (down from as much as 18), restores of virtual machines take minutes instead of hours, and overall backup costs have fallen 20–30% thanks to faster processes and no need to buy additional agents.
