The FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, a research and teaching institution serving students, researchers and staff worldwide, faced rapidly growing and diverse data needs—from large media files to high‑resolution research data and expanding Microsoft 365 usage. Legacy backup tools were increasingly hard to manage and couldn’t keep pace, leaving the IT team spending excessive time on backups and risking interruptions to teaching and research.

FHNW implemented Veeam, with partner LAKE Solutions AG, to protect 1,300 virtual machines across 45 servers and to back up 150 TB of Microsoft 365 data for 30,000 users. The solution combines Veeam Data Platform and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 with disk and tape retention, delivering flexible restores (bare‑metal to virtual), 24/7 availability and automation that cut backup administration by 90% while protecting far more workloads.
