Case Study: The RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain) saves millions and restores operations after ransomware with Veeam

A Veeam Case Study

Preview of the Race Case Study

Thanks to Veeam, the RACE saves millions of Euros by recovering from ransomware, and optimizes its IT services

The Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE), a leading motoring club serving millions of customers, was hit by a severe ransomware attack on December 24, 2019 that encrypted servers, VMs and user devices. With its previous backup platform down and a largely legacy environment (about 140 VMs and 32 TB of data), the IT team faced the risk of prolonged outages that could have jeopardized strategic contracts worth millions.

Partnering with Velorcios and deploying Veeam Availability Suite immediately, RACE implemented a parallel backup and recovery solution that integrated with existing infrastructure and required no extra hardware. Services were restored in under 8 hours, roughly 95% of compromised data was recovered, file-recovery times dropped from 2–3 days to about 4 hours, VMs no longer froze during backups, and staff were freed from backup management—preserving revenue and significantly improving resilience.
