Steel Manufacturer Scales IT System Monitoring by 100 Percent, Boosts IT Control

ArcelorMittal Bremen, a 3,500‑employee steel‑making subsidiary in Germany, faced the challenge of consolidating two IT groups and their disparate monitoring tools into a single, extensible system. The heterogeneous environment — more than 300 servers, VMware virtual machines and mixed UNIX, Linux and Windows systems — made it difficult to get a unified view of system health, meet SLAs, and move from reactive incident response to proactive operations.

The company deployed Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 with the Veeam nworks Management Pack for VMware to centralize monitoring, enable role‑based views, granular alerting and service‑level tracking. As a result, proactive support rose by about 60%, the number of monitored services doubled without adding staff, and IT gained tighter alignment with business needs through consolidated dashboards and reporting.
