A Veeam Case Study
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) is a nonprofit aeromedical organisation that delivers emergency care across 1.7 million km² of Outback Queensland. RFDS needed reliable, accessible backups for patient and aircraft maintenance records—where downtime can cost lives—but faced rising storage and licensing costs, lack of immutability in Microsoft Azure Backup, capacity-based licensing, and fragmented backup toolsets that complicated visibility and compliance.
RFDS consolidated onto Veeam Data Platform (Foundation Edition) and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 with AUCloud, gaining immutability, encryption, continuous data protection and a single pane of glass. Veeam now protects ~50 TB across 120 VMs and 15 physical servers to immutable Azure Blob Storage and 10 TB of Microsoft 365 to AUCloud, uses per-workload/user licensing and tiered archival storage, and is projected to save more than $300,000 in license and backup storage expenses over seven years while improving ransomware resilience and compliance.
