A Veeam Case Study
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a leading public and global health research and education institution, was running many critical services on virtual machines and had been replicating VMs between identical SANs in two data centres. Rising SAN hardware and maintenance costs made this mirrored‑storage approach prohibitively expensive, and the IT team needed a more flexible, cost‑effective way to replicate and protect VMs.
Working with System Professional, the school implemented Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam’s image‑based replication and changed‑block tracking eliminated the need for matched SANs (the school estimates a 60% cost saving versus continued SAN mirroring), enabled near‑continuous protection and instant failover, and allowed fast whole‑VM and file‑level restores. The solution proved simple to manage and upgrade, and it now complements ARCserve for physical machine backups.
