A Veeam Case Study
Playtech Estonia, the primary development center for Playtech Ltd., supports a large virtual environment (about 120 ESX hosts and ~1,000 VMs) and must back up roughly 4 TB of data daily for 24/7 business-critical systems. Their legacy agent-based, tape-centric backup process was slow and labor intensive—weekly tape transport, backups that ran more than 12 hours and disrupted production, and lengthy restore windows—so they sought an agentless, SAN-aware solution with deduplication, replication and minimal user impact.
Working with Net Group, Playtech deployed Veeam Backup & Replication, which delivered agentless, VM-aware backups 10× faster (cutting weekly backup windows from ~12 hours to ~1.5 hours) and reduced daily admin time to about 10 minutes. Restores and full-VM recoveries are now performed in under an hour, file-level recoveries take 30–40 minutes, and built-in deduplication/compression shrank >6 TB of data into <2 TB of storage, saving about $32,000 annually; replication also provides rapid disaster recovery, avoiding an estimated $100,000 per day of downtime.
