Case Study: City of New Orleans achieves ransomware recovery and cloud‑ready data protection with Veeam

A Veeam Case Study

New Orleans recovers from a cyberattack and readies for the cloud with Veeam

The City of New Orleans, a major U.S. tourist destination, was hit by a Ryuk ransomware attack in December 2019 that infected roughly half its servers. Legacy backups failed during recovery, putting critical city services, tourism operations and public safety at risk and prompting the IT team to pursue a more robust business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solution.

New Orleans deployed Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to protect 2 TB across 230 virtual machines (replicated to Pure Storage FlashArray) and to back up Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams. The deployment delivered fast, reliable recoveries, restored confidence in operations, enabled remote work during COVID‑19, provided full control of Office 365 data, and created a foundation for future cloud/VDI migration.
