Lancaster University relies on Veeam to protect its Microsoft Office 365 data and counter ransomware attacks

Lancaster University, a leading UK higher‑education institution serving about 16,500 students and 4,800 staff, faced rising ransomware attacks and found Microsoft Office 365’s native backup insufficient for the fast recovery they required. The IT team needed a flexible, reliable and future‑proof way to ensure uninterrupted access to teaching and administrative systems as remote work and hybrid environments expanded.

The university extended its decade‑long use of Veeam—deploying Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365—to protect 4,800 O365 accounts and nearly 1 PB across 1,500 VMs with on‑premises and off‑site recovery. Veeam’s SureBackup, secure restore and planned immutable S3 and container backup options modernized and consolidated data protection, became the backbone of Lancaster’s disaster‑recovery strategy, and enabled evaluation of public cloud immutability and Kubernetes/container backup.
