Kodiak Island Borough foils a ransomware attack with Veeam and protects data generating $1.4 billion in tax revenue

Kodiak Island Borough, a local government in Alaska serving about 30,000 residents and collecting $1.4 billion in property taxes in FY2020, faced a critical backup failure after decades on Backup Exec. When backups failed for two weeks and ransomware struck its IT environment, the borough’s IT team deployed a trial of Veeam and used it to recover systems and avert data loss.

The borough adopted Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to protect 30 TB across 40 VMware VMs, replicate off‑site, and back up to tape for 3‑2‑1 compliance. Veeam restored access to decades of public‑record emails, enabled fast granular recovery for key applications, saved about 20 hours per week, and reduced costs by roughly $57,000 annually while ensuring reliable protection of the data underpinning property tax revenue.
