Groton Utilities Provides Comprehensive Data Protection with DXi, Scalar Tape, and Veeam

Groton Utilities, a municipal utility serving nearly 40,000 residents in southeastern Connecticut, needed to better protect critical data from loss and ransomware while cutting costs and simplifying a complex multi-site backup workflow. Their small IT team required a reliable, multi-copy strategy that provided off-site “air‑gap” protection without excessive network load or multiple backup vendors.

Groton deployed Veeam Backup & Replication with Quantum DXi deduplication appliances and a Scalar i40 tape library, backing up VMs and CIFS shares to disk, replicating backups between sites, and writing final copies to tape for isolated protection. The solution delivered fast backups and restores, high dedupe rates that support 30-day retention, plans to reduce inter-site bandwidth by over 90% by replicating DXi backups, and strong, responsive Quantum service that lowered operational complexity and cost.
