Eastern Ontario Health Unit is immune to ransomware with Veeam and HostedBizz

Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is a public health agency serving about 200,000 residents across 15 municipalities, supporting services from immunization clinics and food‑safety inspections to in‑house multimedia production. Protecting systems like OnBase, Hedgehog and Vzaar — and meeting PIPEDA/PHIPA data‑sovereignty requirements — was critical, but the legacy Barracuda backup failed DR testing and then a Ryuk ransomware attack encrypted the entire on‑premises environment, including backups.

With Zycom’s guidance EOHU adopted Veeam Backup & Replication and HostedBizz’s BaaS/DRaaS, sending 10 TB across 25 VMs to a Canadian private cloud. HostedBizz brought systems online from Veeam replicas in under two hours, ran operations in the cloud for 30 days while the environment was rebuilt, and restored servers back on‑site in under an hour — reducing backup costs by 35% and ensuring data stays in Canada to support regulatory compliance.
