City of Victoria builds business resiliency and increases ransomware protection with Veeam

The City of Victoria, a municipal government serving about 94,400 residents, needed to replace aging backup tooling to ensure uninterrupted delivery of critical services—from water and emergency response to finance and GIS—running on a Microsoft Azure Stack HCI environment. With legacy backups nearing end of life and ransomware emerging as a threat, IT leadership sought a simpler, more reliable solution that would give the city full confidence in data protection and meet legal retention requirements as they transitioned to Microsoft Office 365.

Victoria deployed Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to protect 25 TB across 130 Hyper‑V and VMware VMs, send air‑gapped tape copies (with plans for immutable Azure copies), and scan backups for malware. The implementation simplified backup and disaster recovery, sped up restores and compliance searches, reclaimed about 10 hours of troubleshooting time per week, and materially increased ransomware protection while providing full access, control and retention for Office 365 data.
