A Veeam Case Study
Umeå kommun, a Swedish municipality of 119,000 residents that also supports IT for surrounding municipalities, runs two fully redundant data centers with more than 90% virtualization (about 640 VMs). Their legacy backup tool couldn’t scale with the rapidly growing vSphere environment—backup job creation was time-consuming, recoveries were slow, and lack of timely OS support (Windows 2012) put their required 24x7 availability at risk.
They implemented Veeam Backup & Replication to back up and replicate VMs between data centers, enabling Instant VM Recovery, file-level restores and Exchange item recovery, plus proxy-based scalability and centralized management. The solution delivered enterprise-scale protection, faster recoveries, simplified administration, and VM migration/DR replication—supporting continued growth (112 TB backed up in 2014 with an expected 40–50% increase) while saving operational time.
