Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), the central IT services provider for universities in Munich and Bavaria, needed a data protection solution to safeguard research, student, and application data across its virtualized environment and Microsoft 365 services. LRZ also wanted reliable backups with data sovereignty, ransomware protection, and support for its planned migration from VMware to Nutanix, and it used Veeam Data Platform Advanced, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, and Veeam Cloud Connect.

With Veeam, LRZ simplified restores, protected more than 1,000 virtual machines, and expanded backup services for partner universities. The results include protecting 350 TB of Microsoft 365 data for over 55,000 users, extending retention to 90 days with immutable backups, enabling business continuity during hypervisor migration, and adding remote off-site backups plus stronger ransomware protection.
