Shaping Public Spaces with New Identities

LRSLAstudio is a Philadelphia-based landscape architecture firm (founded 1991, 10 design professionals) known for transforming ordinary urban spaces into vibrant public places. Faced with the challenge of reclaiming asphalt and underused areas—including a 34-space lot at 30th Street Station and the eight-acre Eakins Oval on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway—the firm was asked to quickly design a temporary activation to test whether the Parkway could be returned to a pedestrian, cultural spine.

LRSLAstudio developed and merged three themed concepts into The Oval — beach, painted blanket/games, and boardwalk — modeling the plan in Vectorworks Landmark and installing it in 10 days on a $180,000 budget for a five-week pop-up. The project packed the site with visitors, slowed traffic with 48 orange flags, reused many components for future events, closely matched the original renderings, and generated user data and positive recognition to inform permanent improvements.
